Kimberley is considered the birthplace of South African Aviation and a replica of the Compton Paterson bi-plane is on display in the Pioneers of Aviation Museum situated near the airport. The first school of Aviation was established here in 1913.
In the 1930’s Kimberely had the best night landing facilities in Africa and during the war years the airport was run by the 21 Flying School for the training of fighter pilots for the Union Defence Force.
